Supports Strong Environmental Legislation

As a Conservation Commissioner, authored a City Ordinance prohibiting the use of chemicals in Springfield's waterways; As Mayor, vetoed legislative action to overturn the ordinance.
ALBANO WILL NOT USE LAWN SIGNS IN CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR'S COUNCIL

Governor's Council candidate in the 8th District and former Springfield Mayor Michael J. Albano today announced he would not use lawn signs for political advertising during the course of his campaign.

Reiterating his past campaign practices of 1985; (School Committee) 1991 and 1993; (City Council) 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001; (Mayor) in not using lawn signs Mr. Albano stated:

"First, I am deeply concerned with the problems of waste reduction in our landfills. When the usefulness of the sign is over, it becomes part of the waste stream and must be disposed of properly in an approved landfill facility. Not using signs eliminates thousands of pounds of needless waste from our landfills."

"In addition, I am concerned about the aesthetic appearance of our counties. Lawn signs are unattractive, raise traffic safety concerns and compete with an already distressed real estate market."

Mr. Albano concluded his remarks by stating, "while this may be a small matter to some, environmental issues are a major concern to me. We must all do our part.""I have never used a lawn sign and never will for any of my political campaigns" the former Mayor stated.Mr. Albano is a former Member of the Springfield Conservation Commission and placed a high priority on environmental issues during his four terms as Mayor of Springfield.
